Stainless Steel Cookware Buying Guide

When it comes to choosing cookware, most people are indecisive as there is a wide array of cookware to choose from. Some people choose according to the material the cookware is made from, copper, non-stick or Teflon pans, aluminum, anodized aluminum, stainless steel, cast iron enameled cast iron, carbon steel, enamel on steel, and so on. While others go for their particularly favored brands, most people, especially those who spend a lot of time in the kitchen choose the ones they can get the biggest benefits from.

While some go for the non-stick types of cookware, many people opt for the most popular cookware nowadays, stainless steel. It is the most common material found in almost every kitchen today. The metal is alloy, or can be a combination with small amounts of nickel and chromium making the surface resistant to rust and corrosion. It is also safe to use as no chemicals can transfer to your food from stainless steel-made products.

  • Heat Efficient Since stainless steel is not as good as copper and aluminum in conducting heat; look for 3- and 5-ply stainless steel pans that have aluminum or copper cores. If you find the 3 and 5 ply stainless steel pans quite out of your budget, you may opt for the ones with aluminum or copper bottom plates. Make sure to check if the aluminum or copper plates cover the entire bottom and sides of the pans.

  • Durability Look for 18/10 stainless cookware for durability. Check what types of metals were used to ensure that the cookware you are purchasing will last. An 18/10 stainless steel cookware has 18 percent chromium and 10 percent nickel. Chromium saves your pans from staining and rusting, while Nickel increases Chromium’s efficiency that makes your pans glossy and shiny.

  • Safety Check the handles of the stainless steel cookware before buying them; they should be sturdy pots and pans thoroughly before purchase. They should be solid, sturdy and heat resistant to prevent any injury.

Practical Find the stainless steel cookware that includes a variety of the basic pans you need, like sauté pan, sauce pan, stock pots that you can use for soups and pastas. Oftentimes, buying a whole set will cost you less, that is if you need more than one piece.

  • Magnetic Stainless Steel some stainless steel cookware use magnetic stainless steel, this makes it ideal to use the cookware on induction cookers.

  • Non-Stick some stainless steel cookware have high quality non-stick surfaces that does not require using so much cooking oil. The newer models of non-stick stainless pans will also allow you to cook using metal cooking utensils. Non stick stainless steel pans will also make your clean-ups easier.  Some of the newer non-stick surfaces will also allow you to cook with metal cooking utensils.

  • Patterned Expansion Joints this feature is present on some of the finer stainless steel cookware. The expansion joints on the bottoms are patterned ensuring excellent performance of your stainless steel pans’ surface. The base is constructed of a six millimeter pure aluminum core and top quality 18/10 stainless steel. This prevents warping, hotspots and separation. Your pans will also stay flat on any cooking surface.

  • Riveted Handles and Side Grips some brands of stainless steel cookware have riveted handles and side grips for easy and perfect grip and balance.

  • Welded Handles are featured in some stainless steel cookware. Instead of riveting the handles to the pans, they are welded, so the handles do not come loose, wear out or trap food particles on the seams.

  • Stay Cool Handles is a feature that prevents accidentally burning your hands and fingers. The handles and grips stay cool while you are cooking.

  • Contoured Non-heating Handles most stainless steel cookware has this awesome feature. The handles are shaped and contoured nicely for ease in handling.

  • Condensate plus Lids is another unique feature of some stainless steel cookware. The covers or lids are uniquely shaped allowing condensation to collect in the lid’s center and drip back onto the food, sealing in all the moisture, flavors, juices and nutrients.
  • Flavor Lock Lid similar to the condensate plus lids, this is another feature offered by some brands, the covers are tight-fitting so the moisture is locked in.
  • Glass and Stainless Steel Lids this feature makes it easier to check your food without having to lift the lids.
  • Etched Measuring Scale this is featured in some stainless steel cookware. Using laser, measuring scale is etched into the side so you can measure liquids right into the pan without using separate measuring cups.
  • Specially Designed Rims allow you to pour liquids with ease. This feature is perfect for drip-less and no-mess pouring of juices or liquids from the pan.
  • Easy to Clean maintenance has never been easy with this feature. Some stainless steel pans can be cleaned simply by warm soapy water, without resorting to scouring pads and harmful chemicals.
  • Oven Safe is another feature perfect for those hurried meal preparation, you can stick the pans into the oven and never worry about damaging the cookware, your food or the oven. Other brands even have stainless steel cookware that can withstand up to 500-550 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Freezer Safe this feature allows you to store your food in the freezer using stainless steel cookware without damaging your pans.
  • Dishwasher Safe this is another feature that would make cleaning your pans easier. Your cookware will come out of the dishwasher brilliant and shiny, without losing their luster.
  • Lifetime Warranty one of the most important features being offered by some brands of stainless steel cookware is the lifetime warranty. Peace of mind comes with this piece of paper.

Choosing the brand of stainless steel cookware will depend on what features you have in mind, what will suit you best and what will work perfectly for you. For others, the prices are always in consideration.
